Baotou has an alternative name as "Deer City" deriving from the Mongolian name meaning “place with deer”. Being the largest city in Inner Mongolia, Baotou serves an important role both economically and politically. Different from the capital city Hohhot, Baotou occupying an arable region started to develop as a city in 1809.
From the 1930s, railway and airport connecting with Beijing, Ningxia and Lanzhou, were built which stimulated the economical booming of Baotou. Wool and hides from Qinghai and Gansu are transported to the east part of China through Baotou. In this process, the one way river traffic and rail way exert tremendous effects completing the trading. Also, there is expressway connecting Baotou with the capital city of Inner Mongolia.
The steel production in Baotou started since the early establishment of PRC and still plays a vital role in assisting the local economy. Owning a huge amount of the natural resources of rare earth metals, Baotou output 45% products in all.
