Hunan，with Changsha as it's capital ,is located to the south of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and south of Lake Dongting . Hunan is sometimes called Xiāng for short, after the Xiang River which runs through the province.Hunan borders Hubei in the north, Jiangxi to the east, Guangdong to the south, Guangxi to the southwest, Guizhou to the west, and Chongqing to the northwest.
Hunan is an important communications center due to its position on the Yangzi River . It was also on the Imperial Highway constructed between northern and southern China.
The Lake Dongting area ,the the second largest freshwater lake of China ,is an important center of ramie production sa well as a famous tourist attraction of the province. In addition , it has Zhangjiajie as a world-known symbol.As chairman Mao's home province , Hunan is also known as a cultural area. It is home to great men, such as Peng Dehuai,Liu Shaoqi and Zhu Rongji.
