Macau Special Administrative Region is located to the west of Zhu Jiang which covers a land area of over 27.3 square kilometers.There are 445 thousand people live in Macau,97% of which are Chinese,others are mostly Portuguese.
Macan was a small fishing village belonging to Xiangshan County,Guangdong province in ancient times.In 1553,it was taken by Portuguese.On 20,Dec.1999,Macan reverted to Chinese sovereignty.
Macau is well known for its gambling industry and is called the “Far East Monte Carlo”.Tourism is another source of gaining foreign currency and pillar of Macau’s economy.As Macau has barely any natural resources,it had been a consumption city for a long time,only producing firecrackers,matches,incense,and other minor traditional handicrafts.However,its economy have been taking on a new face ever since 1960’s.
In the past 400 years,Macau has been one of the busiest centers of exchange between the east and the west.Historic center of Macau is listed in the World Heritage.
