Pingyao is a major city known for its well-maintained ancient city in Shanxi Province. Since Qing Dynasty, Pingyao started to acting as an economic center of China. At that time, Rishengchang, which considered being the first bank in China, was opened up there. The old time’s residences, of great number, are kept in the style of Ming and Qing with a typical bagua pattern for its city layout.
The city walls of Pingyao have a history of near one thousand year with six barbican gates. The pattern resembles the shape of the turtle thus endowing Pingyao a nickname as “Turtle City”. Sadly, a portion of the southern walls went down in 2004. As more and more people want to appreciate the beauty and historical sense of the ancient wall, it went through a great pressure now.
Nowadays, Pingyao still bases its economy agriculturally and is known for products like beef, grains, and cotton.
