With Taiyuan as its capital,Shanxi Province is located in north China,west to Taihang Shan.It covers an area of over 150000 square kilometers,and has a population of 32.68 million.
As a major production base of energy in China,Shanxi has discovered over 120 kinds of minerals in reserve,of which the reserves of minerals like coal,bauxite,refractory clay,gallium and zeolite are the largest in China.Known as “the land of coal”,Shanxi ranks the first in China in the total reserve,output and cross-province transfer volume of coal.
A great variety of life forms exist in Shanxi.There are over 400 species of land creatures in this area,of which 30 are rare creatures under national protection,like red-crown,pheasant,and sika deer.Over 2700 species of plants grow in this area,including dozens of rare plants under national protection,and over 30 kinds of medicinal herbs,as well as over 100 species of grazing.
As a traditional agricultural region,Shanxi carries out the practice of three harvests in two years.Animal husbandry is mainly developed on northwest highland,cows,sheep,donkey and horse are raised here.
