With an area of over 1.6 million square kilometers,and a population of 18.89 million,Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is located along the northwest border of China.Its capital is Urumqi.
Typical arid continental climate brings about strong sunshine,minimum rainfall and a sharp change in daily temperature.As the annual sunshine time here is between 2600~3400 hours,Xinjiang has rich heat energy and wind energy resources.As the second largest pasturing area in China,the region has extensive grassland.But with rainfall and melting glacier as the major source of water,this region is poor in water resources.
With ancient memories of the Silk Road,Xinjiang is a important place on political affairs and economy ,where China and other Asian countries connects with Europe.It is a place rich in cultural and ethnic diversity.Tian Chi,a highland moraine lake formed more than two million years ago in the Quaternary glacial epoch,is situated in the Tianshan Mountain range.The lake is deep,calm and limpid.
Hami melon,grape,apple pear,and apricot are famous local fruits,while Chinese ephedra,bluish dogbaneand snow lotus are well known local medicinal herbs.Local flavours like roast lamb,roasted mutton cubes,specially cooked rice and crusty pandcake are likes by many.
